What is the Greatest Benefit of Success?

It’s probably Not what you think!

What do you think of when you contemplate success? Do you see visions of fancy cars, luxury homes, and a bank account that never runs dry? Or maybe it's more about the respect and prestige you will command once you've made your mark on the world. Perhaps you are imagining the deep sense of pride you'll feel when you finally accomplish your goals.

As great as those benefits can be, they cannot compare to the reward that comes from the personal growth and development you will experience along the way. For most people, success is gauged by how well they can set and achieve their goals. In reality though, true success is more of an inner process of personal change. It is what you learn during that process that actually alters who you are on a core level.

In the words of Matthew Arnold, "Life is not a having and a getting, but a being and a becoming." Staying focused on the following three points will help insure that you enjoy the benefit of positive personal growth on your journey toward success.

1) Break free of a limiting mindset by continuously expanding your vision of what you believe is possible for you. A successful person understands that they are actually capable of much more than they may have previously thought. Even if you start with a smaller vision of success, realize that your goals will expand as you embrace a new concept of personal possibility.

Stay open to and welcome unexpected ways to broaden your horizons. Many times it is the unexpected that will enable you to become more and accomplish more than you ever thought you could. Keep raising your sights progressively higher by setting your focus just beyond the point where you think your capabilities end.

2) At every possible opportunity, try to stretch beyond your comfort zone. Don't just settle for believing that you are capable of more. Be ready and willing to take every opportunity to prove it. In addition to dreaming large and planning large, take action on a large scale as well. Trust your instincts to lead you to the most beneficial opportunities and don't hold back because a degree of risk is involved. Remember, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

3) With every forward step you take, your confidence will grow. Let your success be visible in the person you become, instead of just through your accomplishments. Never focus on trying to impress others. A truly successful person allows their character and demeanor to define who they are. If you pay attention, you will likely notice that people are more interested in who you are as a person then they are in hearing a long list of your accomplishments.

A truly successful person never needs to blow their own horn because they have a deep inner sense of accomplishment that others pick up on. Their personal growth is evident in their speech, facial expressions and body language.

When you focus on the inner journey toward success, you find that the floodgates of prosperity will seem to open up automatically. The external benefits, like money and prestige will manifest in your life as a natural consequence of your internal growth. By then, they will just be a nice bonus to the greatest benefit of success - the incredible person you've become along the way.
